It extends from the mid-west of the province of Catamarca to northwestern Jujuy West half of the provinces of Salta and Jujuy understanding.

The limits range from Puna Argentina Cordillera de San Buenaventura (north of San Francisco Pass in the province of Catamarca) in the south to the far north of the province of Jujuy, and from the mountains bordering with Chile, the west to the mountains of the Eastern Cordillera of the provinces of Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy, in the east.

Gaps found there no drain so make closed basins where extensive salt deposits are formed. The hills are high and rounded (volcanic morphology) surpassing 5000 and 6000 m.

It is one of the few places on earth where almost virgin exploration areas and climbing hills ascended rarely possible.

The plateau known as the Puna, geological entity appeared as 500 million years ago. 150 million years ago, along several major faults started lifting several blocks.

The volcanoes were formed 150 million years ago without their activity is completed at all. The highest of these volcanoes is the Pissis with 6882 meters. Other volcanic giants are Llullaillaco with 6739 m, 6864 m Ojos del Salado, Bonnet Chico 6759 m, 6749 m Tres Cruces, Walter Penck 6658 m..... and many others, above 6000 m., as well as a lot of over 5000 m.
