Continúo relatando mi recorrido por la Ruta 40. Hace cinco años hice esta travesía. Y hoy se las cuento.
La primera etapa, desde La Quiaca hasta San Antonio de los Cobres fue un viaje de experimentación.
Me estaba adentrando en un universo totalmente desconocido. Era la travesía más larga que intentaba hacer en mi vida, en moto.
I continue to relate my journey along Route 40. Five years ago I made this journey. And today I will tell you.
The first stage, from La Quiaca to San Antonio de los Cobres was an experimentation trip.
I was entering a totally unknown universe. It was the longest journey I was trying to make in my life, on a motorcycle.

En la segunda etapa, entre caminos de cornisa estrechos y peligrosos llego hasta Abra del Acay, el paso carretero más alto del mundo fuera de Asia.

Y en la tercera etapa me dí el lujo de beber un café en medio de las nubes.

Después de ello sigo mi camino.

En mi transitar veo la punta de los volcanes cubiertas de nieve casi de frente a mí, como su fueran la punta de un pastel gigante e inmaculado.
In my journey I see the tip of the snow-covered volcanoes almost in front of me, as if they were the tip of a giant and immaculate cake.
Más adelante me encuentro con un argentino-alemán que viaja con una fotógrafa que pretende hacer imprimir un libro entero de imágenes de la Ruta 40 de Norte a Sur. Le he dicho de mandarme una copia una vez terminado. Me gustaría mucho tenerlo como recuerdo. Seguramente podré revivir la mayor parte de las fotos que me recordarán por muchos años la travesía realizada.
Later I meet an Argentine-German who travels with a photographer who intends to print an entire book of images of Route 40 from North to South. I told him to send me a copy once finished. I would very much like to have it as a souvenir. Surely I will be able to relive most of the photos that will remind me for many years of the journey.
Luego conozco tres motociclistas con los cuáles comparto buena parte del recorrido. Dejamos pequeñas ofrentas (apachetas) como muestras de respeto a la tierra y seguimos camino. Tranquilos, sin prisa. Porque en la Puna el apuro no existe. Todo se hace con lentitud. Para no cansarse. Pero también, como es mi caso, para disfrutar la belleza de un paisaje único.
Nos lavamos las manos en las aguas termales y seguimos.
Then I meet three motorcyclists with whom I share a good part of the route. We leave small offerings (apachetas) as signs of respect for the land and continue on our way. Calm, in no hurry. Because in the Puna there is no rush. Everything is done slowly. So as not to tire. But also, as is our case, to acquire the beauty of a unique landscape.
We wash our hands in the hot springs and continue.
Llegamos a un lugar terrible para cruzar donde cometo todos los errores posibles. Un poco porque me dolía el pie de la caída en la segunda etapa y otro poco por ignorancia. Finalmente con la ayuda de todos logro superar el difícil paso y continúo.
We come to a terrible place to cross where I make all the possible mistakes. A little because my foot hurt from the fall in the second stage and a little because of ignorance. Finally, with the help of everyone, I managed to overcome the difficult step and continue.
En teoría para poder cruzar en moto esta serie de pasos tan accidentados es conveniente pararse sobre la misma para darle mayor estabilidad y poder acelerar mejor.
Finalmente llegó el argentino-alemán con su vehículo que si sabía como hacerlo y que me dio una serie de consejos importantes para las travesías futuras. Resultó ser un dirigente de la BMW.
In theory, to be able to cross this series of steps so rough on a motorcycle, it is convenient to stand on it to give it greater stability and to accelerate better.
Finally, the Argentine-German arrived with his vehicle, who did know how to do it and gave me a series of important tips for future journeys. It turned out to be a leader of the BMW.
He aprendido la lección. Iré más despacio porque el peligro no ha pasado del todo. Algunos ríos están muy torrentosos.
Atravieso serranías de cardones, llamas y guanacos. La Puna se extiende hasta el infinito.
Me detengo en La Poma.
I've learned my lesson. I will slow down because the danger has not completely passed. Some rivers are very torrential.

Recojo agua del río y me hago un café mientras admiro la naturaleza y las montañas.
I collect water from the river and make a coffee while admiring nature and the mountains.
Hablo con pastores que me cuentan como muchos de ellos han muerto a causa de los rayos que con frecuencia caen en esta zona.
I speak with shepherds who tell me how many of them have died because of the lightning that frequently falls in this area.
Encuentro un tramo de asfalto que me sabe a gloria. Por la tarde llego a Cachi. Unba joya de paredes blancas que con justa razón fue llamada Lugar Histórico Nacional.
I find a stretch of asphalt that tastes like glory to me. In the afternoon I arrive in Cachi. A white-walled gem that was rightly called a National Historic Site.
En el camping municipal me reencuentro con mis tres amigos motociclistas y una chica brasileña que nos prepara uno de los mejores café que he tomado en mi vida.
Entre café y relatos pasamos el resto de la jornada recuperando fuerzas y esperando las sorpresas que nos podría deparar la travesía del día siguiente.
At the municipal campsite, I meet up with my three motorcycle friends and a Brazilian girl who prepares for us one of the best coffee I've ever had in my life.
Between coffee and stories we spend the rest of the day recovering our strength and waiting for the surprises that the next day's journey might bring us.
